A .numbers file is a spreadsheet created by Apple Numbers, the spreadsheet app that ships with every Mac, iPhone and iPad. It is Apple's own format: Microsoft Excel on Windows cannot open it directly, which is why a conversion step is needed when a Mac user sends one to a PC user.

Formula cells are exported as their computed values — the exact numbers or text Apple Numbers last calculated and stored in the file. That is the same result as copy → paste special → values in Excel. The formula expressions themselves are not carried over, because Numbers formula syntax (named ranges, cross-table references) is not valid Excel syntax and would turn into #NAME? errors on recalculation.

Every table becomes its own worksheet in the .xlsx file, named "sheet-table", so nothing is merged or lost. Dates, numbers, text and TRUE/FALSE values all arrive with the right Excel types.
